Situated in a historic mansion in Botafogo — the site of the former Rio’s Theatre Museum — the House welcomes artists from across the globe. It is a space for imagination and resistance, designed so that artists can live, rehearse, showcase their work, and exchange ideas with the public, right in the heart of Rio de Janeiro.

Since opening in October 2015, the House has hosted nearly 600 artists from 26 countries. It has also consistently provided a stage for talent from Rio’s outskirts, the Baixada Fluminense, Complexo da Maré, Pavuna, and Vigário Geral. In total, more than 1,600 activities have been held, including plays, music performances, exhibitions, and workshops.
Casa Rio also operates as a gallery and performance venue, offering a co-working space for cultural professionals. Through constant workshops, lectures, and screenings, the space fosters new connections and brings partnerships to life.
PPP do Brasil is grateful for the ongoing partnership of FUNARJ and Rio de Janeiro State Culture Secretariat. People’s Palace Projects (UK) is thankful for financial support from Queen Mary University of London that was vital in the initial equipping and furnishing of the space. The space has supported three years of residencies by QMUL students funded by Santander Universities and produced by PPP, as well as a number of our international collaborative research projects.
